Interesting h2g2 entry

The Origins and Common Usage of British Swear-words. Illuminating stuff - I particularly like the bit about the origin of the phrase "the dog's bollocks."

Never knew that 'berk' was from cockney rhyming slang 'Berkshire Hunt'.

Or that Threadneedle St previously had such a fruity name.

aye - but isn't berkshire pronounced bark-shire?

Hm. Either it is nonsense, or the pronunciation has changed, which isn't out of the question.
