All you need is love

Interesting article.

Nice idea, although the solution's obviously not as simple as that (as the article concludes). Some of the recent terrorists have been married with kids, and some families are proud of their martyred relatives. But I suspect there is a link to the economic situation, in that there are lots of poor young men who are un- or underemployed and therefore not in a position to marry, and therefore more likely to get involved in extremism or even terrorism.

Now, if I pretend to be a terrorist, who's going to fix me up with a beautiful wife, house and bundle of cash?

Yes, interesting article. As Colin says, it worked with PLO and IRA but could it really work with Al Qaida and the new generation of fundamentalist terrorists? I fear not.

Yeah, and it has the drawback that it's geared more toward thirty-something terrorists. A healthy economic and societal situation is key (as Colin points out). Alternatively one of the contributors on Metafilter (where I found the link) suggested aerosolised MDMA...

Rumour has it that some of the suicide bombers are given ecstacy anyway just before a mission to make them feel, well, ecstatic about it. Not so weird, given the concept of ecstacy had religious associations originally. Rather than dancing about with glowsticks to Altern-8 (showing my age), they go into divine raptures before murdering people.
