I assumed Christian was a male, but you're right - where's his mane? He was still a youngish lion, so maybe the mane comes later. Anyway, it does appear to be a genuine story and I can't help but love it.
Yes, a bit like calling a lion 'Daniel'. It's a great clip, but I'd be a bit scared by a display of affection like that - how thin is the line between 'friend' and 'lunch' to a lion? It could be a bit like one of those overly friend Glaswegian drunks you sometimes meet in pubs, who are friendly with an undertone of incipient sudden violence... !
