a sci-fi writer. he did "snow crash" which was quite well known - a sort of an update on william gibson's neuromancer. a novel or two down the line he wrote "cryptonomicon" which is like the ultimate geek blockbuster WWII cryptography mid 90s tech historical thriller of all time and a damn fine book to take on holiday. i seriously need to read his latest three books but haven't quite got round to sourcing them from Haringey Public Libraries yet.
