Had a bit of a search and tracked down carbonfund.org - the carbon offset people that RealClimate.org approves of (in its measured, reasonable kind of way).
Going to have a serious look at contributing toward this scheme, or a similar one. Not sure what the most credible UK based scheme would be?

A lot of hot air?
Yeah - the carbonfund doesn't just fund forest sequestration projects though, you can invest in renewable and energy efficiency projects.
I notice the forest sequestration projects it does fund unfortunately appear to be in temperate latitudes rather than the tropics however.
Spookily...
Sorry, posted that article 'cos it gives some indication of the better schemes, but didn't have time to explain meself.
Good one - this is a particular concern of mine, as we're thinking of a long-haul family holiday this year, and I want to make sure I use one that is genuine.
The arguments seem complex, but it's clear that offsetting in this way isn't really going to make up for the damage caused by flying. It looks like something invented not to save the planet but rather to make western consumers feel better about themselves (like the Red American Expres cards). Still, it's got to be better than nothing.
