Weirdly, even though I'm a total atheist and think that religion is one of mankind's most damaging inventions, I usually find it strangely comforting when a British intellectual announces that he/she has discoverd (or re-discovered) God - provided it's a certain type of reasonable, liberal one.

er, sorry, yes - the latter (though they usually go together)
