Googling the Google

Just been reading about Google Base and Google Checkout, now launching in US, coming here soon, to take on eBay and Paypal. They really are becoming all-encompassing.

As quoted in Wired:

"A recent post on Slashdot.org puts it neatly: 'In a few years, you'll be driving your Google to the Google to buy some Google for your Google.' "

Well, despite their recent disgrace in China, it can't be any worse than the current situation. Someone pointed out recently that if you were to drive your Vauxhaul to Asda, filling it up with petrol at Esso on the way you would be shopping from the world's three largest companies (General Motors, Wal Mart, Exxon).

I don't think we need to be ashamed of using Google just because they've become dominant - they're good at what they do, and they don't prevent anyone else from competing with them. Apart from the China thing, but then they're hardly alone in prostrating themselves at China's feet in return for commercial gain while ignoring human rights issues. Two of my colleagues are off to Shanghai to work for a week today, where they will no doubt meet hundreds of others like them.
